Artist Statement
The goal of my artwork is understanding. That can mean a lot of different things. Maybe the viewer leaves with a deeper understanding of themselves, another individual, another culture, me, or a combination. Whether it be my own experience or another's, my art is always trying to portray a new perspective or another existence outside of the viewer's. Art is such a useful way of storytelling, saving memories, and documenting history as it's happening. This can be through books, fine arts, animation and design.
So many women and people of color have been cast aside when it comes to shaping these historical artistic narratives. Many realities, memories and perspectives have been lost to time. As a first generation Afro-Latina woman, I am at the crossroads of many different cultures, ethnicities and races. I have personally experienced the overlap and disconnect between these different cultures. People often forget how powerful it is to try to understand not only themselves, but the people around them. I document my experiences so they can be truly seen. Memories and experiences only exist in the mind. Art allows me to bring to life to them forever. I am the viewer just as much as I am the artist. The viewer may never fully understand and neither will I, but that is what makes art so special. Even at its most boring, dull, and painful moments Life is still so interesting. Many things get left behind because they are deemed as not worthy of saving. So-called meaningless experiences are still just as important as the others. If life only matters when something specific has to happen, then your life will not be very meaningful at all. My art gives meaning to everything I experience. Everything has to have so much value and importance, because I don’t give them any, what an empty life I would have.
